for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf
By: Ntozake Shange
Described as a “chorepoem”, for colored girls… incorporates choreography and traditional scenes to portray the rich lives, as well as the differences and similarities, of african american women. Each woman remains nameless, described only as “Lady in Red”, “Lady in Orange”, and so on through the rainbow. A very collaborative artistic endeavor, this version was greatly inspired by the inner beauty of each woman being portrayed, as well as their identity as a group. The costumes were inspired by the silhouettes of 1970s fashion in order to keep nearest to the playwright’s original vision. Sheer fabrics were used to highlight the differing shapes of each woman’s body, as well as to symbolize the invitation given to the audience to see each woman’s true inner self.
